About

Background

During its Presidency of the Council of the EU, Malta will hold a 2-day conference focused on research and innovation as tools to strengthen cooperation within the Euro-Mediterranean region. The first day of the Conference will be dedicated to a technical-level meeting which will comprise a number of parallel sessions bringing together major academics, policy-makers, industry, key stakeholders and their representative organisations in the region.

The results of the technical meeting will feed into the second day of the conference which will involve the participation of 42 Research Ministers of EU Member States and non-EU Mediterranean countries. This Ministerial event will enable political positions on the way forward for Euro-Mediterranean cooperation to be put forward and renew commitment at the highest possible level for joint efforts in research and innovation.

The event will be organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology within the Ministry for Education and Employment, with the support of the European Commission.

Aim

The aim of this two-day Conference is to provide a platform for discussion at technical and political levels on research and innovation within the Euro-Mediterranean region. The 2nd day of the Conference will mark 10 years since the last Ministerial meeting of its kind. The conclusion of the event will involve the endorsement and adoption of a Declaration which will take stock of progress made in Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, providing an assessment thereof, while also looking ahead towards the implementation of the major large-scale initiatives that are being rolled out in the region, including PRIMA and BLUEMED. The Declaration will also sow the seeds for potential future priorities in Euro-Med research and innovation cooperation during the final part of Horizon 2020 and beyond.
