Background
The EU and the US will be discussing subjects of common interest that fall within the area of justice and home affairs. This is the Ministerial meeting, preparations for which were carried out at Senior Officials level earlier during the Maltese presidency.  

The EU and the US meet regularly to discuss justice and home affairs. They meet first at a Senior Officials level, in preparation for a meeting at Ministerial level. The Senior Officials meeting and the Ministerial meeting take place once during each six month Presidency. The Ministerial meeting takes place in the capital of the EU Member State in the first half of the year and in the US in the second half of the year. 

Areas of common concern include the fight against crime, the protection of personal data and cooperation in the field of justice. 

Aim

The aim of the meeting is for the EU and US to continue cooperating in this field with a view to enhancing such cooperation.
