The Competitiveness Council works to enhance competitiveness and increase growth in the EU. It deals with four major policy areas: internal market, industry, research & innovation and space. The meetings of the research ministers of the Competitiveness Council which are organised in the country holding the Presidency are informal meetings of this configuration, allowing for open discussions, exchanges and policy debates. The purpose of these discussions is generally to set the scene for further negotiations in the technical working parties that follow the Informal Council and that lead up to formal meetings where Council Conclusions and decisions are ultimately adopted.

The Informal Meeting of Ministers of the Competitiveness Council (Research) will be organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology within the Ministry for Education and Employment.

The aim of the informal meeting of Research Ministers in Malta will be to bring together Member States for informal discussions on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, and to have an open exchange on bridging the European innovation divide.
