About

Background

Regional cooperation across all five dimensions of the Energy Union and the engagement of Member States together with other actors in regional initiatives are a key component for a well-functioning energy system. This is a clear acknowledgement of the importance of a regional dimension to energy policy.

In doing so, the opportunities for Euro-Med cooperation will also be the subject of the Informal High Level Meeting on Energy Efficiency in the Mediterranean taking place on the 18th and 19th May in Valletta, Malta. This meeting is being organized in collaboration with the Co-Presidencies of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Aim

The Informal High Level Meeting on Energy Efficiency in the Mediterranean is aimed at highlighting the enriching potential of the Mediterranean region for the creation of a secure, sustainable and affordable energy system for the Mediterranean region and beyond.

The different aspects of Energy Efficiency, which is rendered more challenging in the Mediterranean region, shall be the salient theme to be discussed during the meeting.  Energy Ministers from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and key stakeholders shall discuss opportunities for greater energy cooperation with a focus on energy efficiency.  Government, industry and business representative will be participating and presenting their insights on the subject.

As a follow-up to the July 2014 Euro-Med conference held in Malta, and the Union for the Mediterranean's Energy Ministerial Meeting held in Rome 2016, a session will be dedicated to present a State of Play of the UFM Platforms on Gas, Regional Electricity Market, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.
