The 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union will be officially heralded in by a collaborative music and dance project between the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and ŻfinMalta, with an original music score by Albert Garzia.
The MPO is composed of musicians that hail from 11 different countries, and many of whom are Maltese. The orchestra has been directed by Malta’s most prominent musicians, with its current Principal Conductor and Artistic Director Brian Schembri, who assumed this role in September 2014. The MPO remains Malta’s cultural ambassador due to its contribution to an extensive calendar of events, producing over 60 concerts annually.
The national dance company, ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble will be collaborating with the orchestra in this opening ceremony for the Maltese EU Presidency. As always, ŻfinMalta aims to bring together an ensemble of local and international dancers and choreographers, producing world-class work. While ŻfinMalta often focuses on restaging internationally renowned works, it always sticks to its clear, unique identity of Euro-Mediterranean roots.
In this event, ŻfinMalta and the MPO will bring to the stage an original work of art, articulating the echoing sense of loss, identity and regeneration bound to the human aspect of migration, displacement and relocation.
