About

Background

Ministers and State Secretaries for EU Affairs meet in an informal manner to discuss matters that fall within their remit and to set the way forward on specific issues. This informal meeting is attended by Ministers who represent their countries at the General Affairs Council, which is specifically mandated under the Treaty to ensure consistency in the work of the different Council configurations. The General Affairs Council is also responsible for preparations for meetings of the European Council and to ensure effective follow-up action.

Aim

The aim of the Informal Ministerial meeting being held in Malta is to have an exchange of views on the priorities of the Maltese Presidency, with the participation of Candidate Countries. Ministers from Member States will also discuss the European project in the wake of internal and external factors. These deliberations would provide important inputs to the Malta Informal Summit 2017 in February and the Rome event later on in March.
